Viktorianischer Schmuck
Die Regierungszeit von Königin Victoria steht für eine sich schnell entwickelnde Epoche der Geschichte - und die Schmuckstile bildeten da keine Ausnahme. Keiner Epoche werden so viele verschiedene Schmuckstücke zugeschrieben wie dem viktorianischen Zeitalter. Der viktorianische Schmuck ist nach Königin Victoria benannt, die von 1837 bis 1901 regierte und damit die am zweitlängsten regierende Monarchin war. (2015 wurde sie von Königin Elisabeth II übertroffen.) In dieser Zeit kamen und gingen verschiedene Mode- und Schmuckstile. Nach dem Tod von Victorias Vater und ihren drei kinderlosen Onkeln bestieg sie im Alter von 18 Jahren den Thron. 1840 heiratete Königin Victoria die Liebe ihres Lebens, ihren Cousin ersten Grades Prinz Albert von Sachsen-Coburg und Gotha.
Königin Victoria liebte Schlangenjuwelen, und sie hatte noch mehr Macht, Trends zu prägen, als Kate Middleton und Meghan Markle es heute tun. Das bekannteste Stück der britischen Monarchin aus dieser Form ist der goldene Verlobungsring mit der gewundenen Schlange , den sie von Prinz Albert erhielt - das gewundene Reptil galt als Symbol der ewigen Liebe.
Die 63-jährige Regierungszeit der Königin wird von Historikern in die Romantik, die frühen glücklichen Jahre (ca. 1837-60), die Grand-Periode (ca. 1860-80), die durch den Tod der Mutter und des Ehemanns der Königin gekennzeichnet war, und die spätviktorianische oder ästhetische Periode (ca. 1880-1901), die die Belle Époque ( ) einleitete, unterteilt. Königin Victoria trug ihr Herz auf der Zunge, und ihre Mode und ihr Schmuck spiegelten ihre Gefühle wider.
Der Schmuck der romantischen Epoche mit den üblichen dekorativen Motiven, die mit Perlen, Korallen und Türkisen verziert waren, war ein Fest der Liebe der jungen Monarchin. Alles änderte sich mit dem Tod von Prinz Albert, und die Grand-Periode wird meist mit Trauerschmuck in Verbindung gebracht. Schmuck war kleiner, leichter und zierlicher während der späten viktorianischen Zeit. In dieser Zeit kamen Diamanten in Mode, und auch Halbedelsteine wie Amethyste und Opale wurden weit verbreitet. Die Verwendung von Edelsteinen wegen ihrer natürlichen Schönheit und nicht wegen ihres Wertes war eine Leidenschaft der Juweliere dieser Epoche, und diese Ideologie würde wirklich relevant werden in Jugendstil-Schmuck.
