Diamanten sind Mineralien. Sie bestehen fast vollständig aus Kohlenstoff (Kohlenstoff macht 99,95 Prozent aus, der Rest besteht aus verschiedenen Spurenelementen). Diamanten sind die härtesten Edelsteine und stehen auf der Mohs-Härteskala auf Platz 10. Sogar sein Name, Diamant, geht auf das griechische adamas zurück, was so viel wie unbesiegbar bedeutet. Der einzige Gegenstand, der einen Diamanten zerkratzen kann, ist ein anderer Diamant. Diamanten entstehen tief im Erdinneren bei sehr hohen Temperaturen (1.652-2.372 Grad Fahrenheit in Tiefen zwischen 90 und 120 Meilen unter der Erdoberfläche) und werden durch vulkanische Aktivitäten nach oben befördert. Nach Angaben des Gemological Institute of America sind Diamanten recht selten, und nur 30 % aller weltweit geförderten Diamanten haben Edelsteinqualität.
In den 1950er Jahren entwickelte das Gemological Institute of America das 4Cs-Bewertungssystem zur Klassifizierung von Diamanten: Reinheit, Farbe, Schliff und Karatgewicht. Nicht alle Diamanten sind gleich (es gibt Diamanten, und dann gibt es Diamanten). Der Wert eines Diamanten hängt von der Reinheit (lupenreine Diamanten sind sehr selten, aber der Wert eines Diamanten sinkt, wenn er viele Makel oder Einschlüsse aufweist), der Farbe (je weniger Farbe, desto höher der Grad), dem Schliff (wie die Facetten des Diamanten das Licht einfangen, bestimmte Schliffe von Diamanten bringen den Stein besser zur Geltung als andere) und Karatgewicht (je größer, desto besser).
