Stanislaw Trzebinski, "Tomb" Nero Marble Coffee Table

About

This monumnetal "Tomb" table is clad in marble that has been etched with an organic pattern derived from formations found in nature–on coral, fish, plants and almost every other living organism. It appears to hover above the ground, giving its solid monolithic form an ethereal presence. Working from his Cape Town-based studio, Stanislaw Trzebinski creates fantastical-sculptural works that explore human relationships with the natural world. Working primarily in bronze, his collectible furniture and sculpture express this intimate connection with nature, and in particular his fascination with marine life. Born and raised in Mombasa, Kenya, Stanislaw spent his childhood escaping the bustle of Nairobi to explore the wilderness of the Rift Valley and the East African coast. Immersed as much in its rich cultural heritage of Arabic, African and European influences as in the beauty of its biodiversity, he learnt to speak fluent Kiswahili and track animals. As a young boy, apart from tending to his menagerie of 70 animals that included 35 different species of snakes, he spent summers diving off the tropical waters of Africa’s East coast famous for its mangroves, coral reefs and marine life. He briefly attended the Pratt Institute in New York, where he came to the realization that his creativity was intimately connected to Africa, its nature and peoples. He moved to Cape Town in 2012 to apprentice in sculpture and bronze casting at Bronze Age Foundry under the guidance of Otto du Plessis. Southern Guild presented his work at the bi-annual design auction at Christie’s, London, in 2017 and at Design Miami/ in 2018.

About The Maker

Southern Guild

View Profile
Southern Guild has spearheaded the high-end design category in Africa, propelling its artist-designers to make spirited, challenging and complex work. Its highly curated exhibitions have redefined global perceptions of African design and escalated its value on the international market. Since being founded in 2008 as the sole gallery representing locally made limited-edition design, Southern Guild has birthed a new category for artists and designers in South Africa. In 2011 it became the first African gallery to present at Design Miami, and in 2015 it was the first to be featured at Christie’s London’s annual design auction. The gallery shows regularly at Design Miami in Basel and the US, at Design Days Dubai and the Collective Design Fair in New York, resulting in sales to leading architects, top collectors and respected museums. It has had work from its collections included in Vitra Design Museum’s “Making Africa” exhibition and “Beauty–Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial” at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. Against the backdrop of a design industry that is still fairly young, Southern Guild gives designers a platform to reimagine what is possible. Founders Trevyn and Julian McGowan are embedded in the South African cultural landscape and play integral roles in guiding, advising and mentoring designers.
